What Is an O-Ring? A Small Seal with an Important Job

Learn how O-rings work, how they are measured and how to select the right material for industrial applications.

An O-ring is a circular sealing element with a round cross section and is one of the most widely used sealing components in industrial machinery.

O-rings are commonly found in hydraulic equipment, pneumatic systems, pumps, valves, fittings and many other industrial assemblies.

In simple terms: An O-ring is compressed inside a groove to create contact pressure against the sealing surfaces, helping prevent fluid or pressure leakage.

How Does an O-Ring Work?

When an O-ring is installed in a properly designed groove and the mating components are assembled, the O-ring is compressed between the sealing surfaces.

This compression creates sealing contact that helps prevent oil, water, compressed air or other process media from passing through the joint.

Incorrect dimensions, material selection or groove conditions may lead to premature leakage, deformation, swelling, hardening or cracking.

How Are O-Rings Sized?

O-ring dimensions are commonly specified as ID × CS.

ID = Inside Diameter

CS = Cross-Section Diameter

For example, an O-ring specified as 30 × 3 mm has a 30 mm inside diameter and a 3 mm cross-section diameter.

Common O-Ring Materials

NBR

Widely used for oil-related and general industrial applications. Flow Engineering's catalogue lists an operating temperature range of -40°C to +100°C.

FKM / Viton

Used where higher temperature resistance and compatibility with oils, fuels and selected chemicals are required. The catalogue lists -20°C to +200°C.

EPDM

Commonly considered for water, steam, ozone and outdoor environments. The catalogue lists -50°C to +150°C.

Silicone

Provides a broad temperature range. The catalogue lists -60°C to +230°C, with high-temperature grades up to +300°C.

PTFE

Suitable for applications requiring broad chemical and temperature resistance. The catalogue lists -200°C to +260°C.

Polyurethane (PU)

Another material option used in industrial sealing. Flow Engineering's catalogue lists -40°C to +90°C for PU O-rings.

A Small Seal Can Create a Big Problem if Selected Incorrectly

O-rings with similar appearances are not necessarily interchangeable. Small differences in dimensions or material may affect compression, clearance and sealing performance.

When the original specification is unknown, dimensions and operating conditions should be reviewed rather than identifying an O-ring by colour or appearance alone.
